Allegro's Mission

Mission Statement:

Allegro Foundation… a Champion for Children with Disabilities is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that combines movement instruction with educational & medical expertise, creating new techniques to teach children with disabilities and enhance their quality of life.

Who We Teach:

Allegro teaches over 800 children with intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, autism, orthopedic challenges (wheelchairs and walkers), spina bifida, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, muscular dystrophy, visual and hearing impairments, children “at-risk”, and children living with cancer in FREE classes every week!

Allegro Foundation has been operational for over 32 years. Originally founded in 1991 in Los Angeles, Allegro has taught THOUSANDS of North and South Carolina’s underserved children with disabilities and children "at risk", providing medical, social, emotional, and educational benefits.

Basic Philosophy:

Allegro’s basic philosophy emphasizes the total learning process by combining cognitive and muscle memories together to stimulate sequential and conceptual learning, problem-solving skills and communication, while also building motor skills/physical coordination, and eliciting strong emotional and physiological changes in the body.

ALLEGRO's HISTORY

Originally founded in 1991 by Founder/President, Pat Farmer, in Los Angeles, California, Allegro Foundation…a Champion for Children with Disabilities has been in operation for over 32 years. Since its historic relocation to Charlotte in 2000, Allegro has taught over 11,000 of North and South Carolina’s underserved children with disabilities and children "at risk," providing medical, social, emotional, and educational benefits.

Moments of Hope: A TIMELINE of Our Work

    Allegro Overview

    Measures of Distinction:

    • Allegro remains an Independent Organization.
    • We are NOT a United Way Agency or Arts and Science Council affiliate. In fact, Allegro does not receive on-going funding from any source, nor does it currently receive government support.
    • Allegro is a Nationally Recognized Leader in Teaching Children with Disabilities.
    • In 2004 Allegro’s students made history as the first organization of children with disabilities to perform at The White House and were invited back in 2005 and 2008, showing our nation what children with disabilities CAN do.
    • Allegro’s children with disabilities returned for a third trip to Washington, DC in July 2006 where they performed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for wounded soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.
    • Allegro’s students with disabilities and their one-on-one teen volunteers returned to The White House on December 6, 2008 to perform for the President’s private party of ambassadors from around the world in the State Dining Room. Allegro’s students were also escorted onto the Truman Balcony to greet President Bush as he exited Marine-1 on the front lawn.
    • In partnership with the U.S. State Department and Library of Congress, Allegro periodically conducts learning seminars for international delegations, including educational medical experts from Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary - See Research/Allegro Institute for a full list. * Allegro does not travel to foreign countries nor financially support any international travel.
